The tightened rules for Swedish citizenship have applied since 6 June 2026. The civics test has been held once, as a pilot test in August 2026. The next test date has not been published.

What is the citizenship test?
The citizenship test is a test that shows you have the knowledge of Swedish society and the Swedish language required to become a Swedish citizen.
Why does the citizenship test exist?
The test exists because the Riksdag (Swedish parliament) and the Government have decided that a person becoming a Swedish citizen must be able to show knowledge of Swedish and of Swedish society.
Who needs to take the citizenship test?
The requirement mainly applies to you if you are applying for Swedish citizenship and cannot show your knowledge in any other approved way.
Who does not need to take the test?
Exceptions may exist based on, among other things, age, previous education in Sweden, and special reasons that make it impossible for you to take the test.
Does everyone have to take the citizenship test?
No. The test is one way to meet the knowledge requirement, but not the only one, and not everyone is covered by the requirement.
How does the knowledge requirement work?
The knowledge requirement is the condition in your citizenship application. The test result is one of the pieces of proof that you meet the condition.
