Does everyone have to take the citizenship test?
No. The test is one way to meet the knowledge requirement, but not the only one, and not everyone is covered by the requirement.
It's easy to think that everyone who wants to become a Swedish citizen must sit in a test room. That is not the case. The requirement is about being able to show the knowledge — the test is the main route, but not the only one.
- Some meet the requirement through grades from Swedish education.
- Some are not covered by the requirement at all, for example because of age.
- Some can get an exception because of special reasons.
