What is the citizenship test?
The citizenship test is a test that shows you have the knowledge of Swedish society and the Swedish language required to become a Swedish citizen.
Sweden has introduced a knowledge requirement (kunskapskrav) for Swedish citizenship. The requirement means that the applicant must be able to show knowledge of Swedish society and the Swedish language. The citizenship test is the way most people will use to show this knowledge.
The test is developed and administered by UHR, the Swedish Council for Higher Education. The same authority has long been responsible for, for example, the university entrance exam (högskoleprovet). Migrationsverket is the authority that decides on your citizenship application and determines whether the knowledge requirement is met.
What the test includes
- A part that tests knowledge of Swedish society — the civics test (samhällskunskapsprovet).
- A part that tests the Swedish language. The language part is being introduced in stages, starting with reading and listening comprehension.
What the test is not
- It is not an application for citizenship. You apply for that with Migrationsverket.
- It is not a test you can book freely whenever you want.
- It is not a test you take at home on your computer.
