How does the knowledge requirement work?
The knowledge requirement is the condition in your citizenship application. The test result is one of the pieces of proof that you meet the condition.
The chain, step by step
- You apply for Swedish citizenship with Migrationsverket.
- Migrationsverket assesses whether the knowledge requirement applies to you.
- If it applies, you need to show your knowledge — usually through the citizenship test.
- The test result is factored into Migrationsverket's decision.
- Migrationsverket makes a decision on the citizenship case.
This means that a passed test does not by itself make you a citizen. It fulfills one of several conditions. Other conditions, such as identity, length of residence, and good conduct, are assessed separately.
