How do I meet the language requirement?
The language requirement already exists in law, but UHR's dedicated Swedish test has not yet been introduced. Right now you show your Swedish with grades, sfi course D, Tisus, or another accepted language test.
The knowledge requirement has two parts: knowledge of Swedish society and knowledge of the Swedish language. The civic knowledge test has been introduced. The dedicated Swedish test has not.
What level is required
- Reading and listening comprehension: functional level, which Migrationsverket describes as CEFR B1.
- Speaking and writing: basic level, which Migrationsverket describes as CEFR A2.
Merits that can show your Swedish today
- A pass grade in Swedish or Swedish as a second language from a relevant Swedish compulsory school, upper-secondary school, adapted school form, or Komvux.
- A pass grade in the highest sfi course, course D, or equivalent.
- A pass grade in Swedish from an equivalent compulsory or upper-secondary school in another Nordic country.
- A passing Tisus result.
- Another language test that with a high degree of certainty shows Swedish at a functional level. Migrationsverket mentions Swedex as an example during the transitional period.
- A pass grade in Danish or Norwegian from a relevant final year in another Nordic country can mean the Swedish requirement does not apply.
Timeline for the Swedish test
- The reading and listening comprehension test is linked in the legislation to 1 October 2027, or an earlier date decided by the Government.
- For the speaking and writing parts, the Government decides the date they take effect.
- Migrationsverket summarises the situation as the dedicated Swedish test being offered at the earliest in autumn 2027.
The civic knowledge test is written in Swedish at a functional level. There is therefore no translation into other languages.
